COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Building A Culture Of Unity And Success

GIRIAMA VILLAGE LOUNGE

Giriama is the name of our tribe, and Kigiriama is our tribal language. As part of the Mijikenda people in Kenya, we are the indigenous coastal inhabitants of Mombasa, Kilifi, and Malindi. Our community is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, characterized by vibrant traditions in music, dance, and storytelling, which play a crucial role in our social life.

Primarily engaged in agriculture, we cultivate staple crops such as soybeans, coconuts and maize. Our Giriama tribe has a unique system of governance and community leadership, typically guided by our elders. Our history is closely intertwined with Swahili culture, reflecting a blend of indigenous, Christian, and Islamic influences that are evident in our art, architecture, daily customs and rituals.

As a unified community, we are dedicated to empowering our villages through impactful projects. We are pleased to have launched initiatives such as Sports and our Culture and Arts projects, that promote collaboration and unity, creating a positive impact within our community.

Rachel Clegg

RACHEL CLEGG

Rachel Clegg is a dedicated vegan animal rights activist who has become a lifelong friend of Giriama Village Lounge and Nyundo FC. Her financial contributions have been instrumental in supporting various projects, including our Culture & Arts Program and our local football team, Nyundo FC. We sent Rachel Clegg one of our football team jerseys, as per her request, to show her our appreciation for her generous donations. Thank you, Rachel, for your unwavering commitment and generosity.

NYUNDO FC

Giriama Village Lounge serves as the official sponsor of Nyundo FC.

Nyundo FC is the name of our local football team, rooted in the Nyundo area where we reside. As a vibrant football club based in Kenya, we are committed to nurturing local talent and promoting community engagement through sports. With a strong emphasis on teamwork and player development, our goal is to excel in regional competitions while inspiring the next generation of athletes.

Community sports go beyond the game; they build connections, instill discipline, and promote a healthier lifestyle. Let’s champion the significance of grassroots sports to help develop our resilient, united villages and communities.

Giriama Village Lounge is proud to sponsor our local village football team, enhancing community engagement and youth participation in sports. Our initiatives have included providing players with new jerseys, footballs, and transportation to games.

These efforts have been made possible through the generous support of our donors. We look forward to continuing our commitment to the team and exploring further opportunities for development and support.

VEGANISM AND FOOTBALL

Inspired by the global rise of the vegan movement, many of our football players in Nyundo FC have chosen to adopt a vegan lifestyle, with several others exploring veganism. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our generous donors for their contributions. With the funds received, we were able to purchase new footballs and new jerseys emblazoned with Vegan on them.  This initiative allows us to proudly represent our commitment to veganism during our matches, where we promote awareness and support for veganism and animal rights

CULTURE AND ARTS

THE PROGRAM

Our Culture and Arts Program is dedicated to the children and youth in our villages which has been made possible through the generous support of our donors and contributors Such as Rachel Clegg, Lucia Garza, Simon Ek and Lasse Backman in Europe and America.

Many children in our communities face poverty daily, living in mud huts without electricity or running water. They lack access to computers, televisions, phones, or radios. In response, we established this program to provide these children with opportunities to enjoy life similarly to their peers in developed countries. The primary goal is to help them develop and nurture their gifts and talents while showcasing our rich Giriama culture.

ACTIVITIES

Every Saturday, we offer a diverse range of activities chosen by the children. Initially, they engaged in traditional dance, culminating in a music video produced in collaboration with our local dance team, Wanyika Flani. The song featured in the video was composed by our renowned Giriama artist, Willo Bee.

We have expanded into computer studies and computer games including short film production, where the children select themes and genres for their performances, naming their group GENZ TV. We invite you to share any film ideas through our social media channels.

VEGAN PHILOSOPHY

This program embraces a vegan philosophy, aligned with our Giriama Village Lounge ethics. We operate as a vegan restaurant so every Saturday, we provide nutritious vegan lunches free of charge to all participating children. As the program evolves, we plan to produce more short films addressing veganism and animal rights, along with a cooking show featuring the children preparing traditional village vegan dishes.

I personally contribute to the program by teaching the fundamentals of veganism and animal rights. Additionally, we have initiated English language lessons, recognizing that many village children do not complete primary or secondary education due to financial constraints. One of our local secondary school teachers suggested and advocated for enhancing their education, at Village Lounge, through learning basic English skills.

Music Video

Giriama Children, GEN Z TV, Practicing for Music Video

Recently, under the leadership of their teacher, Gift Yaah, Wanyika Flani has been teaching African dance to Gen Z TV, the children of our villages. They developed a unique choreography that was taught at Village Lounge, culminating in a music video filmed in collaboration with the esteemed traditional Giriama artist, Willo Bee. We gave the children an opportunity to be in a real music video where they showcase their dancing skills. This video is now available for viewing on YouTube.
